“For twenty-seven years, the village has welcomed a dead bride into her husband's house. Every year, her footprints stop at the same door. Last night, they continued inside.”
What waits inside
A bride died on her wedding day, and the whole village remembers the wedding — but no two people remember the same one. Every year, on the anniversary, the women draw her small footprints in turmeric and rice flour from the gate to the threshold, giving her the homecoming she never had. This year the footprints don't stop. They lead straight into a locked room.
A scratched-out face in a wedding photograph. An invitation printed with two different dates. A recorded song that whispers a name no one will say aloud. A priest preparing a wedding nobody arranged. And a woman in a red bridal sari waiting outside the houses of every guest who was there.
The question was never why the bride died. It is whether the village buried the right one — and whose wedding night is about to begin.
